Dear Heather … What is Lymphatic Massage?

Dear Heather,

I was listening to the radio this morning and there was a lady on there talking about lymphatic massage. She made it sound like it’s the way to go if you want to burn off cellulite and firm up even if you do exercise regularly – but what I wasn’t getting from the radio show was – what is lymphatic massage? Do you know what it is and what it’s good for?

– Curious in New Mexico

Good morning Curious in New Mexico,

I did some research of my own after I got your question. Lymphatic massage is beneficial when deal with levels of toxicity in the body. After your kidneys and your liver, it’s your lymph nodes that handle a lot of waste elimination. Lymphatic massage is not like deep tissue massage; instead it’s lighter and more gentle. It can help alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, myalgia and headaches. It also works to help improve positive drainage, increased oxygen and stimulation of your body’s natural defenses.

Circulation is necessary to provide your body with good nutrition. Lymphatic massage encourages circulation – both to remove toxins and to increase the flow of oxygen and other positive effects. Lymphatic massage is good for helping to reduce cellulite that dimples along the edges of the skin for all the above reasons.

It will not eliminate it on its own, but if you combine your fitness program and healthy diet, lymphatic massage can help speed p the elimination of toxins such as lactic acid and carbon dioxide. It can reduce the dimpling of cellulite and provide you with a better overall feeling of healthy.

The really great part about lymphatic massage is that it’s nowhere near as uncomfortable as a deep tissue massage (no harsh digging down into your muscles or extreme finger pressure on you). Lymphatic massage is light and relaxing. I hope that answers some of your questions – I haven’t had a lymphatic massage before, but I will have to check it out now.

Have a great day!
