Decorating Kid’s Rooms: Compromise

I finally figured it out. I know what I’m going to do in my youngest girls’ bedroom, and it’s about time. Right now, it isn’t exactly decorated. I did make nice curtains with a floral pattern in different shades of purple and I bought solid purple sheets, but the rest of it is pretty hit and miss. I was having trouble because my girls have very different likes, tastes, and personalities.

They do share two things in common. My youngest adores purple and her older sister like it too. The older of the two loves horses, and the youngest likes them as well. Okay! A purple horsy room!

I had no idea how to pull such a thing off and make it look reasonably attractive. I consider myself somewhat creative, but this one was a real test. I did the easiest thing and started with the purple fabric treatments. Then, I was stuck. While there are lots of horses from stuffed animals and other toys, statuettes and figurines, and a pictorial calendar filled with beautiful horses displayed, it just wasn’t coming together.

It doesn’t matter, because suddenly my ten year old decided that she prefers dolphins to horses anyway. She still loves horses, but she is fascinated with dolphins. Hmmm… now what?

Well, I was walking through the home section of a local store last night, killing time while I waited for the girls to get done at Awana, and it hit me. To incorporate dolphins, I’d need blue, and blue and purple work together! Cool.

Now, I just have to find the right shades of blue and purple and get busy. I found some really cute stuff last night and even though it isn’t for bedrooms, I think it’s going to work great. My little one even agreed to an overall dolphin theme as long as I include the purple.
