Decorating Techniques: Merchandising

You’ve seen displays throughout stores and in shop windows. They are created to show the available items in the most attractive and appealing manner possible. Doing so is known as merchandising, and the concept of merchandising can also be used in home decorating.

We can even adopt some ideas from grocery store displays. If you have food storage that isn’t hidden behind closed doors, the best way to make it look nice is to line up cans and other packages of similar products for a tidy presentation. Line up cans of corn, green beans, boxes of macaroni, the same way they appear on store shelves. Not only will this help keep things looking neater, but it will also make it easier to find things and to see at a glance which items need to be purchased on your next shopping trip.

We’ve talked about merchandising before, in the Entertaining category. For example, in setting a buffet table, using boxes strategically placed beneath fabric to lift some items higher than others. This concept also works for setting your table or improving the presentation of certain dishes, such as placing foods on plates with a similar color or a contrasting color, depending upon what look you are trying to achieve.

Merchandising also works in kids’ rooms. Toys don’t have to be scattered or stacked, they can be arranged much like a display in a toy store. This way, the room is neat and cute instead of cluttered.

To use merchandising in your home decorating, simply step back and look at the items you’d like to present differently. Then, imagine that you are tasked with creating a display for a store window and attempting to make the items look appealing to shoppers. This is a fun, and beneficial, way to make your home more organized and give it a more put together look.
