Everyone has different ideas about how to decorate a Christmas tree. Some people like them to be filled with memories of Christmases past and decorations that the children have made over the years. With each decoration put on the tree a memory is unleashed. They fill the room like a beautiful perfume.
Other people want a tree that is elegant and simple where all the baubles and tinsel match and are all gold or silver or white. Some others like lots of tinsel draped everywhere or they may choose to go for handmade ornaments. There are as many different ways of decorating a tree as there are people.
When it came to decorating our card tree we stuck to red ribbon, red bows and red baubles only because they show up so well against the natural wood branches and the colorful Christmas cards. With our Christmas tree there’s not a red bauble in sight. The majority are in shades of blue, pink and silver. Many of these baubles have been around for a long time and bring back memories of Christmases when the family was young and we were living in other houses.
A big star at the top of the tree is reminder of that star that led the magi to the Christ child. We have several that are glass and show scenes of some aspect of the nativity scene and bells and smaller stars and a lot of round balls. To me the round balls remind me that God is the creator of this world and that God stepped into our world into the form of Jesus, which is after all the reason why we celebrate Christmas. We do not have Santa and elf decorations on our tree.
This year for the first time we have not hung tinsel on the tree, mainly because Mick wanted it left the way it is. It’s such a beautiful tree he thought anything more would be overkill. This year I’m inclined to agree.
