Decorating the Nursery

While you are waiting for baby, you may spend some of your time decorating the nursery. There are many ways to go about this project. It’s really a matter of your own personal taste. Some go for the bold, primary colors. Others prefer a more subtle approach.

You may decide to go with a baby related theme that matches the crib set or choose a color you love and decorate around that. Consider something more unique than the typical pink or blue. This will make the room last even if the next baby is a different gender. If this baby stays in the room, a more neutral approach will last longer past infancy.

You can do the same thing with furniture purchases. Think ahead a few years when selecting the furnishings for the room. Look for a crib that will become a day bed or toddler bed as baby grows. A changing table that converts into a dresser will last longer too.

Get creative with wall coverings. Some people choose paint colors and wall paper border to match the crib set. Consider something more dramatic, like a mural painted on the wall. You can use characters, nature themes, animals or something related to the theme of the room. Sometimes art students will do a mural at a reasonable rate. Stencils, faux finishes and other decorative painting can give the room a unique look.

When selecting flooring, go neutral so it will last longer. With a neutral tone on the floor, you can change the decor many times without replacing the flooring. Wall to wall carpet is a popular choice. For easier cleaning, consider a hardwood floor. You can use a throw rug to soften it up, but it will still be easy to clean. Replacing a throw rug is much easier and less expensive than tearing out carpeting.

When arranging the room and purchasing furniture, consider storage. Closet organizers and furniture with a lot of room for storage are important. You will be surprised at how much stuff your baby will have. It just seems to multiply as they grow.

You will also want a comfortable place to sit and rock your baby. A comfortable rocking chair or glider that matches the decor of the room will give you a place to relax and rock your little one. A glider with an ottoman allows you to put your feet up while breastfeeding your baby.
