Decorating Tips to Make Your Home Look Bigger

People aren’t buying Mc Mansions at the same rate as a few years ago. Due to the troubled economy, most people’s home buying choices are more scaled down to size. This leaves a different dilemma. How do you make your small home seem bigger?

Here are some tips that can help:

Keep it simple: Stay away from elaborate decor and furniture pieces. Sofa’s should be open-ended, having no arms. Sofas and chairs should be on legs that allow you to see under the furniture as that increases visible space.

Choose your colors carefully: In a small home, you will want to paint with light, pastel colors as bright colors make rooms seem bigger. Colors to consider are butter or sunshine yellow, cream, ice blue, and soft green.

Make sure you can see through it: Purchase furnishings and fixtures that are see through or that give the illusion of being transparent. Consider mirrored walls, Clear glass showers, and glass top tables.

Avoid busy patterns: Choose neutral non-busy fabrics and upholstery to decorate. Bold stripes, and floral fabrics cause the observer to focus on the furnishings and decorations. Neutral colored decor allows the eye to move around giving the illusion of more space.

Try minimalism: By purchasing just a few necessary furnishings you leave lots of floor space in your rooms, and give the illusion of a bigger room. More furniture items will give a room a cozy feeling, but it will also make the room appear smaller. When purchasing furniture consider the function of the furniture and try to get items that will serve more than one purpose. Choose a few medium to large sized items over buying more small furniture pieces.

Stick to simple construction
