Deli Meats are Diet Food

“Are sandwich meats okay on a diet? I mainly eat turkey slices for lunch.”

Meat good. Meat make man happy.

Seriously though, I always recommend that dieters eat meat. Meat has a way of triggering chemicals in the brain that help us to feel satisfied. Most of us could eat lettuce all day long and never feel satisfied but add a few slices of lean meat and you can walk away from a single salad and feel like you actually ate something. Low calorie dieters especially need to include protein as it helps to spare muscle tissue when the body is looking for those extra calories. Dr. Atkins is well known for this method. By continuing to eat protein, you encourage your body to fall back on it’s fat stores, instead of muscle fibers, for energy.

Let me just say this: I don’t recommend eating bologna, olive loaf, salami, pepperoni, hot dogs, Polish sausage or other high fat content meats.

What I do recommend is lean white meat chicken, ham, turkey, or roast beef. Carl Buddig supplies some great little individual serving sized packages of all of these meats and you’ll find they are low in fat and calories while being satisfying. Their single serving size makes them particularly handy to toss into a lunchbox or cooler for those who are on the go all day and need convenience in their menu items. If you prefer to shop at a deli, feel free to continue doing so.

Consider this: what makes a sandwich so calorie heavy isn’t usually the meat or vegetables. It is the dressings you slather on it and the bun that you eat it on. Meat is a great thing for dieters. If you are of the carnivorous persuasion, don’t ever feel that you need to give it up when dieting.
