Almost a decade ago, I watched a movie called Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Sandra Bullock. In all likelihood, it was more than a decade ago, but ten years is my story and I’m sticking to it. Anyway, the point is in this movie, Stallone wakes up from a few decades of being in a deep freeze to a world where Taco Bell won the franchise wars and now serves exceptionally healthy and nutritious meals, commercial jingles were music entertainment staples and anything not deemed good for you was therefore bad and therefore illegal.
Followed all that did you?
Well, this morning – my husband, daughter and I all went to Denny’s for breakfast. There are few breakfast restaurants left in the world – or at least my part of it anyway. Once upon a time there were lots of breakfast restaurants from Denny’s to JoJo’s of Texas to Howard Johnson’s to smaller, mom and pop places. Now – it seems Denny’s has won the breakfast franchise. Their closest competitor seems to be the International House of Pancakes, but there are only a couple of those that I know of in the area.
Anyway, as I was saying, we went to Denny’s for breakfast this morning. It was a bit of a splurge. However, our daughter loves it when we go out to eat somewhere and she gets to have Mommy and Daddy’s undivided attention while others bring us our food and drinks. (Admittedly, I enjoy this too! The being waited on part, anyway!)
One of the things to catch my eye this morning was that like many other popular chains of restaurants – Denny’s now offers a Fit and Fare selection of meals. From their eggbeater vegetable omelets (only 332 calories!) to their Grilled Tilapia over rice pilaf dinner (just 471 calories!), Denny’s offers three to four selections for different meal times along with a breakdown of the calories, fat grams and carbohydrates.
I tried the eggbeater vegetable omelet and it was wonderful! We’re going to have to go back another time to try the Tilapia. Check out your local restaurants and take advantage of their fitness and health selections. If they take the time to prepare the menu, more often than not, they’ve taken the time to make the selections taste as good as they are appealing.
The greatest thing about the menu options is that no longer are dieters consigned to watching others eat their meals with relish. Instead, we are afforded a variety of flavors to sate our taste buds with. It’s a good time to be making a lifestyle change in the world of food, health and weight loss!
