Decorating papers and personal items with stickers is a lot of fun, but it’s even more fun to make your own stickers. There are kits available with pre-cut stickers and special markers or glitter pens so children can color stickers in themselves, or they can design their own homemade stickers. Here’s how:
Items Needed:
- Double faced foam tape
- Scissors
- Penknife (with adult assistance only)
- Glitter or colored sand
- Tiny flat back beads
- Pen
Optional:
- Glue
- Items to trace
Directions:
If you don’t draw, find some items to trace such as bottle caps for circles, or craft foam or craft wood cutouts, or even die cut images for scrapbooking. If you don’t have anything suitable around, print some images from your computer to cut out and trace.
Without removing the paper backing from either side of the tape, draw or trace images with the pen. Cut basic images out with scissors or have an adult use a penknife to cut out more intricate designs.
Now, if you want the entire background to be a solid color, remove the paper backing and dip the sticky side of the tape into glitter or colored sand. Press firmly into the glitter or sand. Shake to remove any excess and dip again. Repeat this process until the tape is covered evenly and thoroughly. You don’t want sticky spots showing because lint and other things will stick to them. If needed, apply a bit of glue and add more glitter to achieve even coverage. Add beads if desired.
If you would like to make stripes or other designs, ask an adult to cut the paper covering into shapes for you. Peel away only certain areas of the paper and dip into glitter or colored sand. When those areas are coated well, remove other pieces of the paper covering and apply different colors of glitter or sand until you achieve the look you want.
Remove the paper from the back of your images, and start sticking your stickers!
