How high of a fence do you need on your property? Fence height is determined by how you plan on using your fence, as well as the style of fence you are choosing, since some styles have limitations on height. Here are some guidelines to help you determine how high your fence should go. Don’t forget to factor in the extra height that will be needed when your fence posts are installed in the ground.
You Need to Enclose a Pool
Regulations are pretty clear on the height and type of fence that is needed when you enclose a pool. The code requires you to have a fence that is at least four feet tall with no more than 4 inches between the pickets. This is for safety reasons and to protect small children from accidental drownings.
You Need to Keep Kids and Pets in the Yard
If you just want to contain the kids and the pets so they don’t wander off, having a fence that is three to four feet in height will allow you to keep the little ones contained while still maintaining your view and your ability to talk over the fence to your neighbors.
You Need to Keep Deer out of the Yard (or Garden)
If deer is a problem in your area and you want to make sure that they stay on their side of the fence, you will need to construct a fence that is at least seven feet tall. This will discourage most deer, although persistent bucks looking for a mate have been known to clear fences that are 15-feet high.
You Need Some Privacy
If noisy neighbors or passerby are a problem for you, having a fence that is six feet tall should do the trick. Many communities require special permits and permission for privacy fences that are taller than this, so check with your local regulations, if you want something with greater height.
