Developing a Sense of Urgency

I don’t know about you, but one of the motivating factors for me starting my own home business was that I didn’t want to feel pushed and rushed all the time; I wanted to operate on my own time frame according to my own mood and temperament. This doesn’t excuse me, however, from needing to “hustle up” sometimes and respond to requests that have a bit of urgency about them. For those of us who would like a more leisurely pace, this can be a big challenge!

Sure, there are plenty of home business owners who are hard-driven, ambitious, or even work-a-holics, but there are also those of us who do NOT want to work under that much pressure. So, we’ve started our own businesses where we can work at our own pace. Of course, we soon find out that there are still expectations and there are often times when the nature of our work demands that we step up the pace and develop some sense of urgency around our work. I have learned over the years that it is far better to rise to the challenge and do what the situation requires of me, than to balk and fight it. My resistance and resentment are not good for me, my business, or my customer/client relations.

We can do this! Even those of us who fancy ourselves slower-paced slackers who don’t want to be told what to do—we can muster the sense of urgency that a crisis or a tight time frame requires. Just because we are operating our own home businesses does not mean that there aren’t going to be external factors that require us to step up the pace and get going! After all, a successful, growing business has a tendency to require us to grow and evolve along with it.
