I never gave Easter Traditions much thought until I had my own children. My husband and I come from families with very different Easter traditions so when it came to developing our own traditions we had a bit of a disagreement. My family did an Easter egg hunt along with searching for our hidden Easter baskets. This took place after dinner and we (the children) had to take a nap in order for the Easter Bunny to hide our treats. My husband’s family just had the egg hunt with a free for all Easter basket of sorts full of candy but their Easter traditions were not consistent from year to year. Coming up with our own Easter traditions for our children (so far only our son can enjoy them) took a bit of debating but we came to an agreement with some room for our Easter traditions to grow.
On our our son’s first Easter, we did not celebrate with eggs and candy. We felt that our eight month old son was too young to care (which was true) and we did not want to make a fuss. We did, however, dress up for Easter Sunday Mass. We even got a suit for our baby boy. Once he began to toddle put into place our new family Easter activities that would become our very own traditions. First, we boiled eggs to color with natural dyes. Our now toddler took it upon himself to stir the eggs with the coloring mechanism (tumeric, blueberries, and wine). He absolutely insisted on stirring them himself and promptly took the spoon out of my hands when I checked the eggs’ color every few minutes. The second part of our celebration occurred after Easter Mass and breakfast, I hid the eggs we had dyed along with plastic eggs filled with foil wrapped organic dark chocolates…
