Our toddler has delays in speech and cognition. She is also delayed with potty training and sleeping.
I tried to get Jessie into speech therapy through ECI early, but ECI would not provide it until she was two. Even then, the services they gave were woefully inadequate.
When Jessie went for her three-year well-child visit, the pediatrician suggested that I take her to a developmental pediatrician for help with her delays. Jessie’s doctor gave me a list of developmental pediatricians in the area and I went to work on getting an appointment. My first choice was no longer practicing so I moved on to my second choice.
After I filled out the paperwork and requested Jessie’s records from ECI and her pediatrician I waited. I finally got a letter with an appointment date six months later. I really hoped to get Jessie seen sooner so I called the third doctor on the list. He could get her in in a month, but the problem was he was out of network and wanted $800.
Our six months of waiting were finally over. We were going to the developmental pediatrician and I could not be happier. Jessie played well with the other children who were in the waiting room and was friendly to the doctor when it was our turn.
I was disappointed with this doctor and the visit. She seemed to have not looked at any of the records or information that she’d had for six months. She ran a lot of tests with Jessie like the tests Jessie did to start school. Jessie tested as being between 29 and 36 months in most areas. She’s 43 months.
I was really hoping to get help from this pediatrician. Instead she gave me printouts and book recommendations. She wants to see us again in six months.
