What’s Halloween without a few bloody fingers? Bloody finger cookies, that is.
If you want to make your Halloween buffet as gory as possible you might consider adding the recipe to your collection.
Then, round out the spread by adding a few tamer selections for the faint of heart such as Halloween Orange Potion, a liquid refreshment featuring the colors of the season and traditional Halloween Snack Mix, a tasty and festive treat that guests can munch on by the handful.
Each recipe makes for devilishly good eats at a Halloween bash.
BLOODY FINGER COOKIES
Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup almonds, whole blanched
Red icing
Directions:
In bowl, beat together butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla. Mix in flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Work with one quarter of the dough at a time and keep the remainder refrigerated.
Roll heaping teaspoonful of dough into finger shapes for each cookie.
Press almond firmly into top portion of finger for the nail. Squeeze center of finger to create knuckle shape. Use a paring knife to make slashes in several places to make finger look more realistic. (Look at your own fingers for inspiration.)
Place fingers on lightly greased baking sheets and bake for 20-25 minutes or until pale golden. Let cool for 3 minutes.
Lift up almond, squeeze red icing onto nail bed and press almond back in place, so gel oozes out from underneath.
Then, make slashes in the finger and fill them with “blood.” Remove from baking sheets and let cool on racks.
Makes about 60 cookies.
