Diamond Pet Food has recalled 19 varieties of dog and cat food that have been contaminated with a naturally occurring toxic chemical that comes from fungus on corn and other grains. The chemical, aflatoxin, causes severe liver damage in animals.
At least 76 dogs have died nationwide from aflatoxin poisoning. The contaminated food has also been shipped to at least 29 countries.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, if you purchased Diamond Pet Food with date codes “BEST BY 01-MARCH-07” and “BEST BY 11-JUNE-07” you should discontinue feeding this food to your pet immediately.
If your dog or cat is showing signs of aflatoxin poisoning, call your vet immediately. Watch for sluggishness, a loss of appetite, jaundice (a yellowing in the whites of the eyes, gums, and belly), severe diarrhea, severe vomiting, and fever.
These are the specific products that have been recalled.
These are the states where the recall is in effect.
Diamond has promised to help owners of affected pets with vet bills. They have also set up a call center staffed with veterinarians. Visit www.diamondpetrecall.com for more information.
