In my work-at-home mom world, each day’s work holds something slightly different. That’s just the work end of things. There is also plenty of variety as far as the other things that I do during the day in my roles as “mom”, wife, and “domestic goddess wannabe”. This is, for the most part, a good thing and I certainly never get bored. It also means that I go through quite a few transitions each day.
On any given day, I could be writing a blog post or two (or maybe even three) during Dylan’s nap and then writing more blog posts or product descriptions after he goes to bed at night. Perhaps there is a court hearing or two, or some legal research to do. If there is not enough work on my plate, no one is going to drop a project in my lap. If that is the case, some of my working hours will be spent looking for projects to bid on and contacting existing clients to see if there is anything that they need.
The variety of work that I do keeps me on my toes and provides wonderful opportunities to utilize all of my talents and abilities. I do find that I have to pause and acknowledge when I am taking off one of the many “hats” that I wear and putting another one on. In the time that I have been working from home, I have realized that there are quite a few ways that I can acknowledge the transitions between tasks. It does not have to be anything complicated or time-consuming, either. Even something as simple as moving my laptop to another room or outdoors, or getting a snack or drink helps me to “put away” one activity in my mind and begin the next one feeling fresh and focused.
How do you transition into and out of work, or between tasks?
