Tomorrow morning around 4:30 I will get my sleepy-eyed children out of the warmth of their beds and will strap them snugly into their car seats for the six hour drive home to see my family.
Along the way we will stop for breakfast—likely at McDonalds. Whatever will I do, you wonder? I’ll order a fruit-n-yogurt parfait…I hope.
Later, we’ll arrive at my dad’s house and will be met with a table full of tempting items; turkey, stuffing, noodles, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and pie…lots of pie. Whatever will I do, you wonder again? I’ll eat! That’s right. I’m not going to forgo the delicious dishes that make Thanksgiving memorable. But I’ll only eat a few bites. Hey, I read “French Women Don’t Get Fat,” sort of ( I browsed through it while at Target one day). I know the rule—three bites then PUT THE FORK DOWN. No, I’m not going to come home thinner than when I left, but I’m not going to come home heavier either.
Friday through Sunday I’ll be at the mercy of my parents. I won’t be preparing the food I eat. I won’t have control over the menu. Whatever will I do? Again, the answer presents itself simply. I will maintain control. I will exercise my God given right to choose how much I eat and I will not stuff myself.
Then I will come home. I will get on the scale. I will hopefully not cry (just a joke…kind of). And I will start anew next week, with fewer temptations and a renewed spirit to lose 10 more pounds by Christmas.
On the road again I go—I hope your own holiday road is prosperous and healthy. Be thankful you are alive and breathing. Be thankful you are in good health. Be thankful you have choices and that each day you wake up is a day to resolve to be alive for yourself and for your families for as long as possible. Enjoy your Thanksgiving feast. Treat yourself. But do it in moderation—like me.
