We’ve looked at the basics — flake fish food, frozen fish food, live fish food, and freeze dried fish food. But there are a lot of different types of fish food that fall under those main headings.
- Algae wafers were developed specifically for bottom feeders like cory cats and silver dollars. Other herbivorous fish will also enjoy the occasional algae wafer. Wait to add algae wafers to your tank until your daily tank lights go off — that way your bottom feeders won’t have to compete with your top dwelling fish.
- Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that makes a great supplement for herbivorous fish. This type of algae contains amino acids and fatty acids that are the building blocks of protein. Spirulina is often available in a vitamin enriched form.
- Shrimp pellets are made from brine shrimp; the weight of the pellets usually makes them sink to the bottom of the tank. These are another good choice for bottom dwellers. Brine shrimp are often used to stimulate breeding cycles in tropical fish.
- Brine shrimp are a popular form of live fish food and make an excellent treat or supplement to flake food. It is also a great food to help get your fish ready to breed.
- Bloodworms are high in protein and get their name from their red color. Carnivorous fish will appreciate an occasional dietary supplement of bloodworms. These worms are high in protein.
- Krill are small crustaceans that are a good occasional supplement to a tropical fish diet. Krill are often fed in order to enhance a fish’s colors.
- Earthworms can be fed as an occasional supplement for your fish. It is very easy to find earthworms in your lawn — just be sure the soil you find your earthworms in isn’t full of fertilizer and other contaminants.
