Digital Frames Go Wireless

Have you joined the millions of other photo fans who have invested in a digital photo frame? As I mentioned in my previous blog they are one of the hottest items you can give mom for Mother’s Day. And unlike in years past, these days you can get digital photo frames in a variety of sizes, colors, styles, and at varying price points.

The evolution of digital photo frames includes the introduction of touch screens, iPod docking stations and WiFi integration, all of which I discussed in previous blogs. In this post I am focusing on a new option in digital photo frames that is more the exception than the rule (for now anyway).

Wireless technology has slowly found its way into the digital frame marketplace. It started out as a way to rapidly move photos from a home computer to a digital frame but has now expanded. Nowadays there are even some services that move photos from major Internet sites directly to wireless frames.

For example, FrameChannel distributes digital content, including photos, from social networking websites such as Facebook, Flickr, Webshots, Picasa, Photobucket and MSN to certain makes of frames, including those by Samsung, Momento, PhotoVu and Digital Spectrum. The service is free; however, the company makes money off of advertisers whose ads show up on the text-based channels of information, such as entertainment, news and sports, that it delivers to the frames if requested. As you can imagine most users opt out of having the “commercials” sent to their frames.

If you are considering going wireless with your digital photo frame you might want to purchase one from eStarling, Inc. The company started selling 8-inch, Wi-Fi-enabled frames for $199 last fall. Each eStarling frame has its own e-mail address so that photos from cellphones, as well as social networking sites, can be sent directly to the frame for display.

Another company, Pandigital, has PanTouch frames that are wireless and can download photos from Picasa. You can also load the frame with shots taken from cellphones that use Bluetooth technology.
