Dinner Discussions 2007 Spring General Conference

Since this last Sunday was General Conference the dinner discussions for this week should be based on several of the talks that were given this weekend. You could assign each of your children to lead a discussion on their favorite talk or you could talk about the talks that apply more to your family situation. Currently you can download mp3 of the talks or watch them on the Internet. The text versions will be available on Thursday.

Several of the talks talked about the Restoration of the gospel. You may want to talk the falling away, the Reformation and then the Restoration of the gospel with your family. To really focus on the Restoration you can read the Joseph Smith History found at the end of the Doctrine and Covenants. You may want to discuss how the gospel has blessed and changed your lives.

Two other common themes were repentance and forgiveness. You may want to review the steps of repentance with your children. It is important that even young children learn the steps necessary for repentance so that when they grow older they will know what they need to do. You should also talk about the importance of forgiving others. You may want to talk about how forgiving helps you to heal after others have hurt you.

One talk discussed the importance of paying your tithing. Another the importance of using music in the home to teach the gospel. Several talks were specifically for the youth. These talks encouraged the youth to prepare now for their future lives, to work on gaining a testimony and to hold fast to the standards of the church. You can discuss any of these topics with your children as well. You may want to take the time to review the “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet with your children, since it sets for the standards so succinctly.
