This week’s dinner discussion topics are based on lesson thirty-four in the manuals. You may need to adjust if you have gotten off of schedule due to Stake Conference. Remember this is just a chance to reinforce the learning that has happened at church. You should keep the discussions as light and as fun as possible.
If you have a child in the nursery or Sunbeam class, he learned about loving others. The lesson included the stories of The Good Samaritan and Jesus healing the blind man. You may want to review these stories, and give your children examples of how they can show love. Be sure you praise your children throughout the week when they show love to others.
If you have a child between the ages of four and seven then she learned about the importance of telling the truth. The children talked about Jesus being on trial, and that he told the truth even though he knew that the men would hurt him. They also role played several situations. You may want to role play some other situations with your children.
If you have a child between the ages of eight and eleven he learned about Elijah and the priests of Baal. This is the story of Elijah challenging the priests of Baal to see if their gods could light a fire on an altar. The priests of Baal failed, but Elijah succeeded even though he had drenched the altar with water. The children also discussed the proper way to worship God. The take home reading assignment is 1 Kings 18:19-39.
If you have youth between the ages of twelve and thirteen they learned about forgiving others. The scripture stories used to illustrate the point were Joseph forgiving his brothers for selling him into slavery, Nephi forgiving his brothers, and The Prodigal Son. The class discussed how forgiveness sets you free from the heavy burdens of hate and anger.
For all members over the age of fourteen the Sunday School lesson was on the teachings of Hosea. The lesson discussed the ways that Israel turned its back on the Lord to worship false idols.
The young women learned about the importance of worthy thoughts. The young men discussed obedience. Relief Society and Priesthood lesson topics were determined by individual presidencies.
