Fitness has become a source of both disappointments and delights. Sometimes the disappointments are just a matter of being impatient. I don’t want to wait for results. Other times the disappointments are a result of my own failures.
The delights come in those measureable successes and knowing that I have overcome a particular challenge. It’s like a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs.
So here is where I confess my biggest disappointment in myself. After starting off on such a good fitness routine, I ended up falling off the wagon. I couldn’t remember the last time I had exercised until I got back on my Wii balance board this morning. It had no problem reminding me that the last time I had exercised was 11 days ago.
I was so disappointed in myself. How did I let that happen? I not only stopped my daily Wii Fit routine but the nightly walks I was taking with my husband had slowly died down. I could come up with some reasons. I stopped exercising because I couldn’t find the time. I stopped walking because the humidity has been too unbearable.
I called these reasons but they are really just thinly veiled disguises of excuses. Excuses are invalid ways of trying to explain away why you’re wrong. In other words you have to try and come up with something that will dismiss your wrong behavior.
When we have excuses we need to find out what the root causes of them are. We have to discover the truth. The truth is that I lost sight of my own advice, to find the best time of day to exercise. Once you find it, you have to stick to it.
I know the best time of day for me is the morning but I allowed other things to crowd out my exercise routine. So this morning I got back on the wagon. The other truth is that using humidity as an excuse to not walk at night is a lie. I have just been too lazy to walk at night so I came up with that excuse.
Yes, there have been some disappointments. However I was so incredibly delighted when I got to the end of my exercise routine today and discovered that despite my failures, things weren’t that bad. I was anticipating that after 11 days of not exercising I would have gained back all the weight I had taken off.
I only gained back one pound. I was surprised but very delighted. I guess all of the work I have been doing has paid off. Now if I can just stick to my routine.
