Discipling Young Hearts: Can you be ambitious and Godly?

As sweat beaded on her forehead she stood in perfect form to serve the ball over the net. People in the stands cheered her on. Teammates were counting on her to make the game point. If she could score she was would be the hero. The thought drove her as she tossed the volleyball up in the air with her left hand and prepared to strike with her opposite hand. Winning was in her grasp and she would be awarded MVP this year.

There is nothing wrong with desiring to win MVP of your sports team or working diligently to that end. Yet, before you aspire to achieve you must examine your heart. Ambition set in the heart of a Godly girl can be unstoppable. Yet, ambition driven with a selfish heart will gain you only loss.

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. ~Philippians 2:3

The Word is clear. Nothing is to be done with conceit or pride in one’s abilities. A conceited girl desires people look to her and not to Christ. The treasure inside her cannot shine through the veneer of pride. To prevent pride one must develop humility (lowliness of mind). Humility does not equal weakness. It does not disrupt an enterprising thoughts or aspiring hands. It was Christ who “made himself of no reputation” (Philippians 2:7) and demonstrated the true strength of humility. A young lady cannot fulfill selfish ambition and be humble at the same time. Humility keeps your heart in check and allows you the freedom to aspire for Christ.

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 3:14

There is no higher calling than the calling of God in our lives. You must ask yourself if your desires are in line with the calling of God on your life or if you seek to glorify yourself. Does your ambition hurt your relationship with Christ? Did you pray fervently for direction and God’s hand to be upon your actions? Certainly it is not wrong to be ambitious. The position of the heart will determine if your ambition is Godly or selfish. The unstoppable girl discerns ambitious thoughts so she can be ambitious for Christ alone.
