Disciplining Teens

When my children were younger it was easier to discipline them. You wouldn’t have been able to convince me of that back then but in hindsight, I realize how true it is. I had more control over the situation and a lot more choices when it comes to discipline methods.

Now that my children are older I have a whole lot less control and my choices seem to be very small. Sure, I can take away those things they enjoy, especially in the way of technology…the computer, television, iPod, cell phone or video game system. While it may be traumatic at the moment for them it doesn’t take much to realize that in reality, it isn’t much of a punishment. It is actually a healthy thing to be without those devices.

Plus I have come to realize that my children’s dependence on these devices isn’t as deep rooted as I had thought. They are content to just sit in their bedroom and think…or not think. They don’t necessarily need to be entertained like they did when they were younger.

When they were small it drove them nuts to have nothing to do, to have their precious toy taken away. It doesn’t seem to have the same effect anymore.

However I recently discovered what may be my best weapon when it comes to discipline. If there is one thing that my children depend on me for it is to drive them to various destinations. Socializing is a big issue and if they can’t get to a friend’s house or an activity, it is very upsetting.

I have to admit, however, I find this particular discipline technique difficult to follow through on. Because then that means I am left with a sulking, snotty teen. They let you know how miserable they are. Sometimes it’s just easier to let them go so I don’t have to deal with the attitude.

Yet I realize that the attitude is yet another issue that must be dealt with. Pretty soon it all seems to be piling up and I have a big mess on my hands. Disciplining teens is definitely not an easy task.
