It looks like Drew Barrymore is teaming up with Disney to make a run for the “Border” in a live-action feature (think Charlotte’s Web and Racing Stripes). The film, South of the Border follows the journey of a Beverly Hills Chihuahua who gets lost in Mexico during a vacation with her owner.
Barrymore will be lending her voice talents to the pampered Chihuahua (named Chloe) who needs help to figure out how to get from Mexico back to her digs in Beverly Hills. Joining Barrymore on the project are:
- Andy Garcia
- Salma Hayek
- George Lopez
- Cheech Martin
- Paul Rodriguez
- Edward James Olmos
- More
What a stellar cast. At this point, it’s not clear which actors will only be offering their voices, although Garcia (recently seen reprising his role in Ocean’s 13 as Terry Benedict) will be the voice of a German shepherd with a sad story of his own. He was a police dog, but when he lost his sense of smell, they kicked him off the police force.
George Lopez will voice the macho Chihuahua Papi, who seeks to romance and please the beautiful Chloe. Yes, I’m already laughing. I know my daughter is going to want to make a run for ‘South of the Border’ because dog flicks are often very popular whether we’re talking Lassie, Benji, Air Bud or the Shaggy Dog.
It’s worth noting that this is not a remake of the classic 1943 South of the Border featuring Donald Duck. In that film, Donald meets Jose Carioca who shows him around South America. The movie followed the endorsement policy of the “good neighbor policy” that encourage South American relations to help avoid their joining up with the Nazis. South of the Border was followed up with another great Disney classic in 1945 called The Three Caballeros.
Are you looking forward to South of the Border?
