Today’s article, like my pets blog post yesterday, is going to be a bit of a mixed bag. I’m doing this because an important news item broke yesterday morning that I need to share. Because the story isn’t very long, however, I’ll then go over the details of an unrelated event at Disneyland.
First things first: The Disney Blog reports that yesterday the Walt Disney Corporation issued a recall on hundreds of watches that were sold at the park. The children’s watches, which light up when a button is pressed, could potentially burn the skin of the wearer.
All of the watches under question feature one of three Disney characters: Tinker Bell, Lightning McQueen (the lead from “Cars), and Buzz Lightyear. The watches were sold at Disneyland and Disney World, the Magic of Disney shop at Orlando International Airport, and on Disney cruise ships. They were available between November of last year and this January.
The watches are a possible hazard because the battery current running through the watch could interact with the nickel backing on the reverse side of the face. This might create an irritation or burning sensation in the skin of the wrist, particularly for those who are allergic to nickel.
Around 1200 copies of the watches were sold at about $30 each. Six cases of the irritation were reported, causing Disney to issue the recall.
Parents of children who have the watch should immediately remove it from their kids. If you’re unsure that the watch your child possesses is indeed one of those in question, check the back of the watch. They are all inscribed with the tracking number K130-6377-7-10187.
If you have one of the watches you can receive a $40 refund. For instructions on how to return the watch and receive the refund call Walt Disney World at (877) 560-6477 Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. EST. If you’d like more information on the specifics of the recall, you can check out the full details from Disney, which includes the press release from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, here.
Now for happier news, albeit some that still relates to the Disney parks. The Disney Blog also has information on this Sunday, February 20th’s, fan-sponsored theme day in the Anaheim park: Dapper Day at Disneyland.
The event draws its inspiration from many early renderings of the park made by the original Disneyland designers before it opened. The park was full of smiling groups of people enjoying the experience while decked out in the latest high-class fashion designs of the day.
When I said high fashion, I meant it: women in cocktail dresses, men in suits, even children dressed in their smartest duds. While I find the idea that the original Disneyland designers had of the park being a more upscale resort rather than a low-key escape for the masses rather snobbish, I think the idea of just having one day to dress up at the park rather fun. Also, your clothes don’t have to match the 1960s styles that inspired the day; anything from classic to modern high fashion is encouraged.
Dapper Day, taking place on Sunday between 12 and 11:30 p.m., is open to anyone in attendance at Disneyland. For more details on the fan event, check out its Facebook page here.
