The Fourth of July is a special holiday here in the United States. It’s a day of patriotism, history, fireworks, beaches, picnics and camaraderie. It’s a day when all Americans enjoy America in all her forms – from her capitalistic ventures to her militaristic achievements and so much more. Disney, in many ways, represents a large slice of Americana and so it’s appropriate that their Fourth of July celebrations seem pretty exciting.
This year, the Mouse will be doing something a bit different. The forecourt of Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom, Disney World Orlando will be the scene for the swearing allegiance of 1,000 immigrants who want to become American citizens. It will be the first mass naturalization of its kind at Disney World.
There have been several mass naturalizations over the last few weeks as immigrants file their applications in advance of a change in immigration fees. July 30th, the fee will climb to nearly $600 from the $330 it costs right now.
The swearing in ceremony at Disney World will be conducted by Emilio Gonzalez. Gonzalez is the director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Senator Mel Martinez, a champion of immigration reform and Republican senator from Florida will deliver a keynote address. The ceremony includes the Pledge of Allegiance as well as Gloria Estefan performing the Star Spangled Banner.
Also in attendance, Lee Greenwood will sing God Bless America and a squadron of F15s from the U.S. Air Force will fly overhead as part of the closing event. I have to say, I am proud to be an American and what a way to welcome 1,000 new citizens to our country.
So if you are planning a trip to Disney World over the 4th of July, be prepared for the huge event that day in the Magic Kingdom. It will likely be more crowded than usual, but it’s a worthwhile event to witness for our children – because becoming an American is something to be proud of especially on America’s birthday.
