While foam crafts and pre-made Christmas kits are fun, the cost of all of those supplies can really add up. Fortunately, there are many fun Christmas crafts that you prepare ahead of time for kids. These do it yourself kits can be given as gifts, used as group crafts or just enjoyed with your kids at home.
I know about preparing kid’s Christmas kits first hand, thanks to our annual Christmas festival at our church. We prepare different craft kits that can be used by the children in the Sunday School, in SuperChurch, in the preschool and during the three nights of the event itself at a craft table. I’ve also put some kits together for elementary class parties.
This year, we wound up with a mixture of store bought and DIY kits for the Christmas festival. Not only were the homemade kits a bigger hit, but it was easy to prep more of them when supplies exceeded our expectations. When the store bought stuff ran out, we were up a creek.
Here were some of the biggest hits with the kids. Check back each day for new Christmas craft ideas!
Angel Ornament
Supplies to prepare the kits:
- Small paper plates
- White tissue paper squares (buy them precut for time or cut them yourself out of leftover gift wrap to save even more)
- Gold or silver pipe cleaners
- Ribbon
- Glitter, sequins, stickers or other things to use for decoration
- Paper or plastic bags if you want to package the kits individually.
Additional supplies to have on hand for assembly day:
- Glue (small paper cups filled with glue and paintbrushes to spread it make it easy for the kids)
- Crayons or markers to decorate
Preparation directions:
- Using a template, cut angel shapes out of the paper plates.
- Using a hole punch or scissors, cut a hole at the top of each angel.
- Cut the ribbon into short lengths for hanging the angels.
- Cut the pipe cleaners to smaller lengths and form each length into a halo. You’ll want to make sure that you leave an end (halo on a stick) to make it easy to attach it to the angel.
Directions to make the angels:
- Thread a length of ribbon through the hole in the angel and tie the ends to form a hanging loop.
- Apply glue to the wings.
- Crumple up the tissue paper and add it to the wings until they are covered and resemble feathers.
- Draw a face on your angel and decorate her dress.
