DJ AM Dead at 36

I came home from a night out with friends and read the headline that DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) was found dead in his Manhattan apartment. Friends reported not hearing from him for two days and police broke the door down to find his lifeless body. Great, Ted Kennedy, Dominick Dunne, and now DJ AM – the death in threes theory continues!

Yes, the same guy that seemed lucky to survive the fiery plane crash in South Carolina last September is dead at the age of 36. He was found both unresponsive and unconscious in his apartment on Friday afternoon. The police don’t suspect foul play and said the cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner. DJ AM’s publicist, Jenni Weinman, released a statement saying, “The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. Out of respect for his family and loved ones, please respect their privacy at this time.”

After the plane crash that killed four others on board, DJ AM talked about the pain of losing the others in the plane crash and wondering why he was spared and living with the guilt of that.

DJ AM seemed slender and together at the time of his death, but things weren’t always that way. Before dating Nicole Richie, he dealt with a crack cocaine addiction and had gastric bypass surgery to get his weight under control. I wondered if maybe putting his body through all that caused some damage, but PEOPLE magazine quotes a source that said prescription drugs were found in the apartment. DJ AM had been working on an MTV program titled “Gone Too Far” about drug addiction that was to premiere this coming October.

PEOPLE is also reporting that a source said DJ AM was despondent after a breakup with girlfriend Hayley Wood. He wrote on the social network Twitter last Thursday “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york ain’t always what it seems.”

So, I guess we will have to wait to see if it was drugs, harm to the body done by drug addiction and weight, survivor guilt, or just a healthy issue that killed DJ AM.
