Each school year I have a child in my class, or at least in my grade level, that I worry about. I worry where the child is going in the afternoons and what the child will eat on the weekends. We have even worried enough to fill a child’s backpack with food for the weekend.
If we worry about children over the few days off every now and then, how should we feel about summer vacation? Let’s face it. We all know that there are children out there that are much better off at school.
Unfortunately, for some children breakfast and lunch are not always provided at home as they are at school. Many children on free and reduced lunch at school do not receive summer nutrition aid.
Many children from lower income families are left under the supervision of an older sibling. The parents must work to support the family and do not have extra income for day camp or sitters.
Many children have too many opportunities for negative influences during the summer. These influences include alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
While many cities offer boys and girls clubs and other family friendly hangout locations for children, there will always be children that are left out or refuse to participate.
If you know of a child that may be alone for large periods of time this summer, offer taking the child a meal every now and then. Contact local churches. Many churches offer summer meals for children. They also offer transportation to church activities such as Vacation Bible School.
Also always double-check the complete situation before letting your child attend activities and sleep overs with other children. Make sure that parents or appropriate supervision will be with the children. You may have a different idea of the age of letting your child go unsupervised than another family’s idea.
Have a great summer and keep a watch out for the children!
