There was a brief little article in the Sunday morning business section of my local paper that said that although we might SAY that we don’t like work meetings, most workers secretly confess to really liking the business meeting. I admit that I was downright shocked by this admission and realized that I would not be one of those secret confessors. But, it surprised to me to find that people really do like all the meetings that seem to characterize the modern work world.
I’ve written before here in the Home Business blog about how one of my favorite things about running a home-based business is the lack of meetings. To my way of thinking (and working) meetings are one of the biggest, most boring, time wasters there are! But, I guess according to the business article, I’m alone. Other folks really do like those gatherings which is likely why the average workplace has so many of them!
According to the article, people think that smaller meetings are more productive than large ones—meetings with three to four people being optimal. Coming from a world of nonprofit organization where I worked for nearly two decades, I can say that I developed a distaste for meetings of all sizes since we had so many of them! But, I can concede that there is something socially fulfilling about working in a group and that seems to be what meeting-lovers are confessing to liking.
I thought that I was part of the majority—the home business owners who actually enjoy and appreciate a lack of meetings. But, I found out this weekend that I might really be in the minority and that the reason there are so many meetings in the work world isn’t because of mismanagement and time wasting—but because we all secretly crave and enjoy them. What do YOU think? REALLY?
