The problem is not that people can never know God’s will and know God’s character, more often it is that we don’t really want to know. We don’t want to know, because we’re afraid it may require some response from us. That’s why many people claim to believe in God. But when it comes to putting their trust in Jesus and letting Him be Lord of their lives they baulk.
The bible tells us if we want to know what the character of God is like, then we need to look at Jesus because Jesus and the Father are one, John 10:30, John 17:1-5. Jesus isn’t showing us something different to the character of God as presented in Proverbs. He is actually showing us the same picture of God’s character that Proverbs presents.
Throughout his life and teaching Jesus shows us the character of the Father.
Jesus shows us how to live in obedience to God and what that means for daily everyday life. If we want to be sons or daughters of the Father, Matthew 5:43 then we need to show God’s love to others. It is not enough to do the bare minimum. It means going that extra mile, loving not just those who love us but loving our enemies and praying for them. How often do you pray for those that hurt you, that rub you up the wrong way in your family, in your workplace, in your church family in the neighborhood?
Being a child of the Father also involves thirsting after righteousness, Matthew 5:6. We need to eliminate those sins that God reveals to us and seek to be more like Jesus, for Jesus is our great teacher. If you find it hard to know what a life living in obedience to God’s Word and obedience to God’s command looks like, you will find it in Jesus, for in Him are ‘all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.’ Colossians 2:3.
Do you want to be wise? Follow the teaching and example of Jesus. Immerse yourself in God’s Word so that you reflect His character in your everyday decisions. The truth is Jesus is in the transforming business. He can change ordinary people like you and me into people God delights in, into people God can use to further His kingdom. Are you willing?
