I have a soft spot in my heart for fondue. When my husband proposed to me many, many years ago, he had a small engagement party waiting for me at his best friend’s house. I guess he must have been pretty certain of himself! Anyway, it was a fondue party. I hadn’t had fondue since I was a kid, and I loved it. I loved that the pieces were bite-sized, and I loved that care had gone into setting it up, and I loved that he would do something so out of the ordinary.
There’s a fondue restaurant in our area where fondue goes for $75 per person with a two-person minimum. Yes, it’s a nice meal (and it’s mystery shopped!), but for $150 I can buy a fondue pot and have fondue every night for a month – including the cost of the food. Right now, Amazon has the Rival 2-pound Chocolate Fondue Fountain for only $10.99. As always, if you have Amazon Prime, shipping is free. Otherwise, you’ll want to order it with something else that brings your total to over $25 so you don’t have to pay for shipping.
Since it’s a chocolate fountain, you won’t want to put cheese in it, but there are a lot of fondue recipes for dessert. I personally think simpler is better, just some strawberry pieces run quickly through the chocolate with a little dollop of whipped cream. Yes, I know it’s cheating on the diet, but doesn’t fondue qualify as a special occasion? My girlfriend likes amaretto mixed with hers. I’m not too keen on that taste and she uses a little bit of the real stuff (we’re teetotalers). She claims it’s delicious. Give me the pineapple, strawberries, cantaloupe, and leave me alone with the Ghirardelli’s flowing smoothly and sensuously through the fountain. Whatever your taste buds’ pleasure, fondue is a treat!
