Do You Have Any Business Superstitions?

I have a favorite type of pen that I use in my writing work. My passion for my Sanford uni-ball Onyx fine point pens is partly due to the fact that I just like the way they feel and they tend to write smoothly and without running out of ink too soon. But, it has also developed into a bit of a superstition. I think that work done with “my” pens goes better, is more likely to be accepted, and always comes in under deadline. Now, I don’t really know if it’s actually true or not—but I believe it is and that makes it one of my business superstitions.

I think that any time we humans are faced with situations we care deeply about, but don’t always feel like we are in complete control, we are apt to develop superstitions—sports, parenting, hobbies, etc. Why not our home businesses too?

Sometimes, it might be difficult to tell the difference between a habit, a tradition, and a superstition. I think it’s fair to say sometimes we might have preferences or routines in our business operations that touch on all three. I have a little stuffed doll of “Ursula”—the villainess from the Disney movie “The Little Mermaid” that my children gave me more than ten years ago. She has held an honored place on my desk or work space ever since. Her role is to remind me that some days are “Ursula” days—days when a person just has to take control and not be so focused on “being nice.”

So, these are a couple of my work superstitions. How about you all—do you have any superstitions in your home businesses that you would be willing to share? Who knows, we might actually be able to create some here ourselves!
