While gazing over a few headlines from some web articles, I recently ran across one that caught my eye. I suppose the title question was not intriguing enough for me to read the article but definitely enough for me to ponder for a while and give a response to you.
The title was in the form of a question and it read, “Do you have to be a teacher to do a teacher’s job?”
After thinking about this question for a little while I realized that in fact it was questioning the qualifications of teachers. This question is insinuating that anyone can teach.
So in those terms I say yes, you do have to be a teacher to do a teacher’s job. However teachers come in all forms. Not all teachers graduate from a teacher’s education program.
Preachers are teachers. Parents are teachers. Preschool workers are teachers. Our leaders of the country are teachers.
Some people are natural teachers. They have the natural ability to communicate and relay information to others. I have no doubt that there are people out there without a teaching degree who could teach a group of children. In fact we have many substitutes who are not certified that do a wonderful job.
However everyone does not fall into this category. There are many details that teachers learn in college and through professional training that enhances their ability to teach.
I myself can make cakes. However I am not a trained baker. Although I can make and decorate cakes, I know that there are many techniques to design that I am unaware of.
So while one may be able to successfully teach without a teaching degree, one must be a natural teacher to be a successful teacher. In addition, it is very helpful to be up to date and knowledgeable in teaching methods.
