It’s 8:30 AM the day before Halloween; I don’t have Tyler’s costume. If you read my previous blog, you know that we returned to New Orleans last week. I wasn’t planning to do anything for Halloween but when I picked Tyler up from school yesterday, his teacher told me that they are having a party tomorrow at the site of the new school. Right now, the lower grades (pre-K through 3rd) are attending school at a temporarily location. The rest of the school (grades 4th through 12th) has moved to the new campus. And I do mean campus. The school reminds you more of a college campus! Anyway, we have to send their costume to school and they will dress before we pick them up and head to the party at 3:00.
If you’ve ever tried to find a costume this close to Halloween, you can imagine what I am going through; the pickings are indeed slim. Add to this the fact that although there are many retail stores open, many of them are not in the area where I am living. And to top it off, it’s raining. Now, I’m one of those types of people who hate to drive in the rain. Especially now that I have a brand new car. I can just imagine some fool running into the back of my car because his old brakes went out. But I digress.
As parents, we have to do things for our kids that we sometimes don’t want to do. Tyler is so excited about this party that I can’t disappoint him by not getting him a costume. One of the things I have heard over and over since I have been back is how we should try to keep things as close to normal for our kids as possible. So many kids have been uprooted, bounced around and experienced many changes these past two years. When kids participate in something as simple as a Halloween party they can see hope for the future even if they’re still living in a trailer or out of a suitcase in a hotel. So if I have to drive around all day until I find “some kind of superhero”, then that’s what I will have to do. Who knows, maybe I will pick up a costume for myself.
