Do You Need To Get Motivated?

Motivation. It is the driving force behind all that we do – or don’t do, for that matter. Sometimes we feel like we are motivated, other times, not so much. Have you ever wondered what this mysterious creature called motivation is all about? I am sure you have at least wondered where your motivation went, on at least one occasion.

Today, I learned about a book that I am very eager to get my hands on. Before I tell you what it is, I must confess that I am somewhat addicted to literature of a success/inspiration/self-help/motivational nature. The book is called “Get Motivated”, and it is written by Tamara Lowe. Since it is that time of year, it is definitely on my Christmas list.

Why am I so excited about this book? For one thing, reading is one thing that I do to take some time out just for me. As many of you home-based professionals probably know, it is important to take some time each day just for yourself to engage in activities that you enjoy no matter how busy you are. The time you invest in recharging your batteries through rest and leisure helps you to work more effectively than diligently plugging away without any sort of break or reward for your efforts. The main reason that I am so excited to read “Get Motivated” is that it holds the promise of helping me to, well, get motivated.

I am sure that I am not the only home-based professional that occasionally suffers from a lack of motivation. It could be a side effect of working for myself, by myself, but I am not sure that this is entirely to blame. In fact, I am not looking to place blame. I am looking to understand what motivation is all about and how I can bring some of it my way. As a first step, I learned that I could take an online quiz to discover my “Motivational DNA”. The concept of Motivational DNA is described in “Get Organized”, and is a tool for assessing what motivates you as an individual because each of us is motivated in different ways. What I discovered by taking the quiz is that my motivational “type” is that of The Relater. What does that mean? It means that I am a people person, among other things. I’ll have to read the book to fully understand what being a Relater is all about, but for now, I am content to say that the description of the Relater motivational type fits me very well. How well do you understand what motivates you?
