Do You Really Need an Overseas Honeymoon?

The earthquake, tsunami and devastation in Japan have greatly affected at least one couple’s honeymoon plans. A local couple, Jessica and Kieran wanted to go to Japan during cherry blossom time, as their wedding next week is having a cherry blossom theme, which sounds all lovely and romantic.

The honeymoon was to have been spent in Japan at the famous cherry blossom festival in Osaka. But recent earth shattering events in Japan have put paid to that idea. Sadly their plans could also seriously dent their finances as they are not able to recover their losses on fares and so forth. Now with a few days before the wedding they have to rethink whether to have a honeymoon in an Australian resort destination or what.

I am a romantic, but it does raise the question to my mind, do couples really need an overseas honeymoon? Do they even need a honeymoon at all? Mick and I had one night before we left for our new home together. That was very much a finance decision. Do I feel we missed out on anything? Not a bit.

The whole point of a honeymoon is to enjoy being together and starting your life together. We did. We didn’t need to be anywhere exotic to do that. Just being together was honeymoon enough. Sometimes I wonder whether couples wouldn’t be better using the money that would be spent on a honeymoon and putting it towards something more practical or something that will help them in their marriage. Given the amount of money some people spend on a honeymoon, maybe it could even be put towards a deposit on a house or some needed furniture, like a good quality bed.

When you think about it, a lot of the time in on a honeymoon is actually spent in one room and you don’t have to be anywhere exotic for that! You may disagree. I’d love to hear what you think.
