Do You Record General Conference?

For a few years now, we have recorded general conference. Usually it is because during the Saturday session we might be busy with other things, and always think we will come back to it. Well, this year, we were out of town during general conference, and did not get to hear much except for President Monson’s announcement about missionaries shortly before we lost radio coverage in the car. So, I have been really grateful that we recorded it this year. And, to make it even better, we are actually watching those recordings!

My husband had the idea that we would watch one conference talk every night after the kids were in bed. It has turned into a way for the two of us to really get a chance to listen to the talks instead of being interrupted every 5 minutes by our three little kids. I love watching these talks with him. We don’t lose interest because we are only watching one, and then we have something to discuss afterward. It has been a great time for us to spend time together spiritually.

It got me thinking about other great reasons to record conference. Here are a few of the reasons I think it is a great idea:

Family Home Evening lessons made simple. Watching a conference talk together as a family is a great idea. Especially for older children.

A spiritual boost. We all get down from time to time. Sometimes, we just need a spiritual boost in the middle of the week. Why not turn on a general conference talk and watch?

Expand your personal study time of the scriptures. So many times I am watching conference and don’t take the time to look up a scripture that has been quoted and really ponder it. Recording the talks and then listening to them again with the ability to pause, and study something further is a great way to enhance your personal scripture time.

The music. I don’t know about you, but I love the music of general conference. Saving the conference and then taking some time out of your week to listen to some of the music from conference is also a great way to feel the spirit.

Watch it on Sundays. So many times, we are looking for something appropriate to turn on TV on the sabbath. What better thing to watch than conference. Especially if you have afternoon church, it would be a great way to spend your morning.

I think that these talks are often not reviewed by the average member of the church once we hear it. However, just like the scriptures, the talks are inspired by our latter-day prophets and apostles, and we should be studying them as well. In April, think about recording general conference.
