Do You Still Read the Want-Ads?

Not too long ago, I was talking with another home business owner and she confessed that she still “reads the want-ads” every Sunday in the local paper. “Just in case” she added when she made the confession. It got me to thinking about whether or not reading the want-ads or classified ads for jobs once one was busy building a home businesses represented lack of faith and commitment or just made good sense?

My opinion is probably tainted by the fact that I have more work and “jobs” right now than I can comfortably handle. There really isn’t any room for more work even though I would love to boost my income even more (of course!). I suppose reading the want-ads makes sense from the perspective that it keeps a person “in the know”–you can stay on top of what the job market is like in your area “just in case” as my friend said. But, what is the point of reading the want-ads if you’re not looking for work? Isn’t it just wasted time or time spent opening up a can of worms that is better left unopened?

I guess it also depends on how it makes a person “feel” to read the classified ads. I never liked reading the classifieds even when I WAS looking for work. I always get disheartened by what standard wages are and over how many of the jobs listed just sound un-fun. One of the reasons I started my own home-based business is that I don’t want to have to depend on someone else out there to “give” me work and decide what I’m worth.

How about you–do you still read the Want-ads even though you’re running your own business? Are you looking for work, trying to keep your options open, or seeing what sort of jobs are available in the current marketplace? AND, if you’re like me and you avoid the classified job ads–what is YOUR reasoning?
