I am not really an affirmation junky, but I do like to have a phrase or two (or a quotation) posted on my desk, dresser, refrigerator, etc. Okay, maybe I am an affirmation junky–but I think we get enough negative comments and barrier and blocks from the outside world, that a little two-sentence pep talk or reminder to keep the faith can’t be a bad thing! How about you? Do you use quotes and affirmations to keep you going when the going gets rough?
My affirmations change as I do–what is working for me one year may not be what I need to face the challenges that life brings along. I find that good snippets of encouragement show up everywhere–in books I am reading, magazine articles, lines and quotations from movies and television–even things my kids say might end up as a morsel of wisdom to return to when I need a little boost. Affirmations are like a little mini-chant that I can say over in my head or out loud if no one is listening (honestly, sometimes I’ll say them even if someone IS listening–some days just go like that!). Sort of like the Serenity Prayer but more of a pick-me-up, you go, girl, or hang in there! And, who, I ask you , doesn’t need a solid dose of THAT a few times a day?
Recently my sister sent me a postcard which has taken a prominent place on my work desk as well. No words, but I think it totally counts as an affirmation. My sister is a professional actor who lives in New York so I know she knows struggle and determination and rejection. This little postcard has a doll-like drawing with a very stern, determined face holding two tiny plant sprouts in either hand. The card is titled “Sprout, the Ambassador.” She reminds me that my life is growing–new beginnings, starting over–and all the faith and determination such places bring. Just what I need at the desk I plunk away at in the wee hours of the morning.
So, do you have favorite quotes and affirmations you’d be willing to share? Do you use them to keep you motivated and encouraged? Are there any other affirmation junkies out there like me?
