Do You Want People to Think You Are Professional or Approachable?

As owners of small, home-based businesses we have plenty of choices to make about just exactly what sort of business operation we want to have, and we can influence and shape our business reputation as well. One of the choices we can make is whether or not we want to put forward a professional face, or we want to be more homey and approachable (or we can even try to do a little bit of both)…

There are definitely benefits to both approaches—some customers and clients are really looking for a polished, professional business, while others may want something a bit more folksy and approachable. I know that there are people who seek out small, local business and want someone who is available and able to give them personal attention while others want to know they are working with the biggest, best, and most top-notch professionals in a particular industry. While you may not be able to be the biggest and the best, you can certainly be as professional as the big corporations even if you work from a home office—you just have to decide that is your priority image.

So, how is it that you want your home business and you as the proprietor to come across to people? Do you want to appear ruthless and driven? Softer and more compassionate? Do you want people to think that you can compete with the “big guys” or do you want them to see you as an alternative? To a certain extent, you get to decide how professional of an operation you want to present and you do have some influence over your reputation. You CAN make your choice on professionalism part of how you market your business, but you have to know where you stand first and what it is you would like to “put out there.”
