We call it a “Home Business” but that does not mean the same thing for all of us. For some, it means that our business takes place in our home (a child care or elder care facility), for others it means that we have a home office or work for someone else from the comfort of our home. For others, it simply means that we are working for ourselves and not for a traditional company or someone else’s business. For many of us, we have come up with our own definition or a combination of some of these others.
How and where do you work best? If you have a small, home business you may have more flexibility to figure that out. I have had some people tell me they could never start and operate their own home business because they don’t want to spend that much time at home—they enjoy getting out and about too much! As many of you can testify, you may get out and about plenty because that is how you work best too.
It has taken me a while to create a work schedule and style that works well for me. I have actually been through a few different incarnations of my home business and I imagine I will make more changes as my life changes. For example, since I still have children at home, I need to take that into account in how I do (and don’t) get work done. Sometimes, I have to take my work on the road because there is too much going on at home. When my children have all left, I may be able to devote less of my day to work and work more from home because I will have less distractions. Of course, I won’t know for sure until I come to that bridge!
Finding out where you work best can be liberating and it is definitely a perk to running your own operation. We don’t have to adhere to a designated work space unless that is how we truly prefer to work.
