My husband and I are not huge movie goers but yesterday we took ourselves off to the movies to see ‘Enchanted.’ And we were! What a fun movie with lots of laughs. I suspect it was a Disney film doing a send up of Disney animated films.
Given the G rating I expected there would be lots of children present and there were parents and children but also a number of adults like us in couples or on their own and teenage boys in front of us. Judging by the reaction from the audience, there was not a person there who didn’t thoroughly enjoy the movie. What a change to see a movie that was entertaining and a lot of fun, yet affirming the positive things in life, like love. I think all of us left the theater feeling good.
Giselle is sent, by the suitably wicked-looking Disney queen and stepmother of the prince, from her fairy tale world into the real world where ‘happy every after’ does not exist. Without giving away too much of the story away, Prince Edward comes to save her. His entry into the world along with a precocious chipmunk and the queen’s henchman produces some hilarious moments. Of course, it does not all turn out as first thought.
Whether we believe in happy ever after in this life or not, and the statistics of divorce, social problems, war, crime and abuse would convince us that it does not exist, the Christian knows that one day there will be a ‘happy ever after.’ The movie got it right – love is most important.
But as our minister reminded us yesterday morning in church, it is the love of God for His people that is important. Love so great that he sent His Son for us to rescue us, John 3:16. Jesus willingly embarked on a rescue mission to this earth and it cost Him His life, Philippians 2:5-8. God’s rescue of us turns out far differently than the rescue mission of Giselle by Prince Edward in the movie.
One day all who love Jesus will be with Him in that ‘happy ever after’ where there is no more sin, no more war, or disease, or hate, or evil or sadness and tears, Revelation 21:4. What a joyous time that will be.
