Wouldn’t it be great if you found out that the US Government owed you hundreds or even thousands of dollars? Wow, that would be a great way to start the holiday season, wouldn’t it? Imagine getting a check that could cover all of your holiday expenses and then some. Sound too good to be true? Well, for 100,000 people, it is reality, and you could be one of them.
That is because Uncle Sam owes all of those Americans a refund, to the tune of more than $153 million. That is right. It is all because of problems with mailing addresses. You know, sometimes an “c” looks like an “a” or someone moved and didn’t inform the IRS. I know that I’m constantly correcting Doctor’s offices and businesses with our address because apparently the road that we live on sounds like a lot of other things than what it really is. Ever have that problem?
I know that sometimes the government isn’t always on the ball. Periodically, I will get jury duty notices for a state that I haven’t lived in for more almost 20 years. If that could happen, who knows what money might be waiting out there.
You are getting excited about this aren’t you?
Well, there is a very easy way to check to see if you have a refund coming to you. You just have to go to a little section of the IRS website to check the status of your account. You’ll need your social security number, your filing status and the amount of your last refund as shown on your tax return.
Just remember, as the website recommends, close your browser after you do your check. While the website hides all but the last four digits of your social security number, it is better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!
