Does Your Web Site Have a “Culture”?

By now, you probably know that I think unique is good when it comes to a home business and how we market and promote ourselves. In my opinion, we don’t want to look and sound and seem like everyone else and this goes for our web sites too. If your business web site looks like a copy or a template of hundreds of other web sites, you might not be making the most of your online presence. I think that a web site should have an “image” and a “culture” that lets people know what you about and helps separate you from the pack.

So, how can you create a culture for your web site? Just ask yourself how you can make it so that your web site truly represents your business and you—what your mission is, what you are about, how you do business, goals, hopes, dreams, etc. Photographs, drawings, images, font, color—all of those elements come together in order to create a cohesive image (or not so cohesive in some cases)—instead of dabbling with a little of this or a little of that, figure out what you and your business “stand for” and try to send that message with your web site.

More and more of us with small home businesses may never actually see our customers and clients face-to-face; we don’t have physical shops where our prospects come and find us so our web site or our online presence is IT. Even if you have a simple web site with only a bit of information on it, it can still send a message about the culture of your business—who you are, what you value, etc. It is not enough just to get a web site live on the web and trust that the universe will find you—you need to put some thought into what it says and how it says it and whether or not it is a good representation of your business.
