Doggone Good Fun

My 5-year-old loves dogs. So much so that she often wonders aloud: “Why didn’t God make me a dog instead of a girl?” My response: “Dogs aren’t allowed to eat chocolate.” That usually puts an end to her I-wanna-be-a-dog monologue.

There’s no way we can raise a dog at the moment, so to placate my daughter I try to come up with ways to incorporate doggy-themed fun into our days.

Here are some of her favorites puppy-themed projects:

CANINE CARDS

Materials:

Card stock or construction paper

Scissors

Markers or crayons

Googly eyes

Glue

Directions:

Cut the card stock or construction paper into a square.

Fold square into a triangle.

Fold down two sides of triangle to make the dog’s ears.

Make dog’s face by gluing on googly eyes and using markers or crayons to draw on a nose and mouth.

Have your child write a message under the dog’s triangle-shaped flap ears before giving it to a loved one.

PAPER BAG PUPPY

Materials:

Small paper bags

Construction paper

Glue

Scissors

Markers or crayons

Googly eyes

Pipe cleaners

Directions:

Turn paper bag upside down so opening is facing the table.

Fold the two square edges of a paper bag under, to form the dog’s head.

Use construction paper and cut out ears, eyes, a nose, and a tongue.

Glue the tongue inside the mouth. Glue the eyes, nose, and ears to the dog’s face.

DOGGY TREATS

Ingredients:

1 large tube (16.3-ounce) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits

12 slices pepperoni

6 whole, pitted black olives, sliced in half

6 pieces of green pepper

1 jar (2 ounces) sliced pimentos, drained

2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese

1 can (8-ounce) pizza sauce, warmed

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Separate biscuits.

Place six biscuits 3-inches apart on a greased baking sheet.

Cut each remaining biscuit into six pieces, and then roll each into balls.

Attach two balls to each whole biscuit for ears, pinch dough to seal.

Sprinkle a little cheese on whole biscuit.

Decorate each biscuit with a pepperoni slice on each ear, olive slices for eyes, green pepper for nose, and two pimento strips for mouth.

Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Serve with pizza sauce for dipping.
