Doll-less and Drama-Free

Her taste in music may drive me to the edge and I’m not too fond of her selective hearing, but good gracious, am I grateful that my daughter is not a fan of American Girl dolls.

Don’t get me wrong; I think the company does an amazing job incorporating historical context into the dolls’ design. However, they also do an equally phenomenal job of sucking you dry in order to fund your kid’s doll fix.

American Girl dolls are not cheap. And by not cheap, I mean bucks big enough that it forces you to decide whether to pay the utility bill or purchase a historically accurate dress for a doll that costs more than I paid for a semester’s worth of college housing.

Oh yeah, these dolls put the cha into cha-ching.

Thankfully, my daughter has no interest in collecting the uber-popular 18-inch designer dolls with fancy names like Felicity, Kirsten, and Josefina.

Clearly, I must have done something spectacular in a previous life to be blessed with such incredible fate.

American Girl doll or new school supplies… hmmm…

Believe it or not, that’s a quandary some parents are faced with right now.

Okay, maybe it’s not school supplies, but it could be. Then again, it may be better to sacrifice new pencils rather than lunch money.

Lunch money, breakfast money, cash for dinner, snacks and drinks; you’re going to need it all to quell the cries of your weeping daughter should she start begging for the latest characters to join the American Girl group.

Welcome Cecile and Marie-Grace.

According to the company, the new “characters” are best friends from New Orleans circa 1853. Cecile is a “daring girl who learns to make a difference in the beloved city she’s always called home.” Meanwhile, Marie-Grace is a “caring girl who discovers her voice in the exciting city she now calls home.”

Both girls come with riveting stories that delve into their relationship with each other and the Crescent City which they call home.

The dolls and the books hit store shelves next week, which means you don’t have much time to count the change in your daughter’s piggy bank. Actually, I wouldn’t bother with the coins, you’re going to need a suitcase of cash ala “Deal or No Deal” to bring home the newest members of the American Girl family.
