Don’t Forget the Travel Snacks

Of course, every car, van, and truck today has a place to set your drink, whether it is a can of soda, a plastic cup, or a travel mug for tea or coffee. Finding a cup or mug and a car with a matching drink holder is a whole other subject, so we will leave that for later. However, I wanted to talk about edible items that we can carry in self-preserved bags, you know, the small items that fit perfectly in a purse or even in a pocket when traveling.

If you are a parent of small (or even large) children, you know how difficult it is to stop for snacks. Of course, there are times such as on a bus or airplane, the option is simply not available. Although you might be handed a packet of peanuts of pretzels, you can be relatively sure that your children will snub their noses, while looking to you for a better solution.

To make your travel plans more convenient and enjoyable, I wanted to list some snack items that would work perfectly, no matter how you choose to pack them – in the bag they are packaged in, in a sandwich bag, or even in a small plastic container.

-Granola Bars – Some people just like the convenience of buying granola bars at the store but if you want this particular travel snack food while saving money, you might make your own. All you need is to mix fresh granola from unsweetened cereal, along with grains, raisins, dried fruit, chocolate M&M’s, and anything else that your kids like. Even pumpkin and sunflower seeds are great additions.

-Fresh Vegetables and Fruits – Although not all kids are huge vegetable fans, when in a pinch, these actually make great travel snacks, also healthy. Again, package small pieces of celery, carrots, dried bananas, cranberries, or other similar foods and your kids will love you for it.

-Cheese and Crackers – Yes, you could purchase small travel packets of cheese and crackers, which is a great option, but again if you want something different and probably fresher, pack your own. Simply choose crackers with a hard type cheese, seal them in zippered plastic, and you have a great snack for a few hours, perfect for airline travel.
