It’s hard to slow down and make time when it seems you are being pulled in a million different directions. It’s even more difficult when you have extended family, career, child and life demands on your time. But whether you and your spouse have time or not, it’s important to make time for each other if you make time for nothing else.
It’s easy to say sharing quality time is important, it’s a little more challenging to make the quality time available so that you can share it and benefit from it together. So let’s make making quality time a little more available for you and your spouse by planning your time accordingly. The following are ten ways to help you create quality time together:
1. Hire a babysitter who will watch the kids for you even if you and your husband are at home. Amazing how nice it is to have someone answer all the Mommy and Daddy requests while the two of you enjoy some quiet time together.
2. Shower together – it’s a great way to increase intimacy and have ten to twenty minutes of time where you can laugh, talk and touch.
3. Plan to eat lunch together once a week – plan to meet near the office to maximize the time and see if you can leave the kids with a grandparent, babysitter or at their school.
4. Once a month, minimum, plan a date night where you get out of the house for several hours together.
5. Swap babysitting duties with another couple so they can get a weekend day to themselves every other week.
6. Go for a stroll in the evenings. After dinner, in the summertime especially, while it’s still cool and pleasant – it can be nice to take a stroll holding hands. Let the kids ride their bikes or roller skates – they get to play and you two get to talk.
7. Plan once every three to four months to take a long weekend away. This may sound impossible, but it’s amazing what you can do if you plan ahead.
8. Breakfast together in the morning. Plan for at least ten to fifteen minutes where you aren’t rushing out the door and you can chat about your days over coffee and bagels.
9. Plan chores together – spend time working on the yard or the house – while this may not sound like a lot of fun, it cuts down the burden of work on both of you and gives the two of you time to talk.
10. Play cards – avoid gambling games like poker, but a few rounds of gin rummy can be fun and entertaining while still allowing you both time to talk.
